Ballynamannin Fort, Ballynamannin, Co. Galway

What survives of this large circular earthwork in County Galway is, by any measure, only a fragment of what once existed.

The rath, measuring some 91.5 metres in external diameter, was originally defined by three banks and two intervening fosses, a level of defensive elaboration that would have marked it out as a site of considerable local significance. Three-banked raths are far less common than their single-banked counterparts, and their additional earthworks are generally taken to signal elevated status among the farming and landowning communities of early medieval Ireland. Today, the monument sits in rolling pastureland with a stream running close to its south-western edge, and what remains gives only a partial sense of its original scale.

The damage accumulated over centuries is considerable and comes from several directions at once. A railway line has taken out the outer bank from the south-west all the way around to the north-west, while a field wall cuts across the monument at the south-east and south-west, and rubble cleared from nearby fields has been tipped into the inner fosse. The gap at the north may be an original entrance, with some structural logic preserved through the middle bank, where transverse blocks define the western side of the opening. Writing in 1952, a researcher named McCaffrey recorded traces of stone-facing on the inner faces of both the inner and outermost banks, a detail that suggests the earthworks were once reinforced or finished in a way that would have made them more visually imposing. Beneath the surface, the southern half of the interior contains a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the kind commonly associated with early medieval raths, likely used for storage or as a place of refuge.
