Military Buildings
At a place called Harboursmouth on the Cork coastline, there are the remains of a barracks, a structure that by its very name points to a military presence at the edge of the sea.
Coastal barracks of this kind were scattered along the Irish shoreline from the seventeenth century onwards, often positioned to monitor shipping lanes, guard against smuggling, or respond to the threat of foreign landing parties. The name Harboursmouth suggests a strategic position where a river or inlet meets open water, precisely the sort of location that would have drawn a garrison.
