Barrows
In a quiet corner of County Sligo, at a townland called Ballyfree, there is a barrow, one of those low, rounded earthen mounds that the prehistoric dead left scattered across the Irish landscape.
A barrow is, at its simplest, a burial mound, heaped over the remains of the dead during the Bronze Age or earlier, and the ones that survive in Sligo do so largely because the land around them was never ploughed or built upon heavily enough to flatten them entirely. That this one persists at all is worth a moment's attention.
