Barrow – bowl-barrow, Lakill And Moortown, Co. Westmeath

In the townlands of Lakill and Moortown in County Westmeath, a cluster of ancient burial mounds sits quietly in agricultural land, and one of them is considerably more imposing than its surroundings might suggest.

Seven barrows, the collective term for these prehistoric earthen burial mounds, form a cemetery here, six of which still retain visible surface remains. The dominant monument among them is a bowl-barrow, a type characterised by a rounded, bowl-shaped mound enclosed within a surrounding ditch, and this particular example is almost conical in profile, with steep sides rising to a distinct rounded apex.

A survey conducted in 2015 by David McGuinness recorded its dimensions in careful detail. The mound measures roughly 17.2 metres north to south and 17.1 metres east to west, and it rises 3.8 metres above the floor of the encircling ditch on its north side. That ditch, which measures just over 22 metres across in overall diameter, is noticeably better preserved to the north than to the south, where it has largely silted up. The positioning of the mound on a slight northward slope appears to have been deliberate; the northern face of the mound is more massive, and the ditch correspondingly deeper on that side, suggesting the builders were compensating for the gradient to keep the monument looking symmetrical when viewed from below. Where erosion has exposed the mound's interior, notably at the south-west, the material beneath the surface is notably stony. A drone photograph taken by Peter Nagy has since confirmed that a smaller ditch-barrow sits immediately to the west of this central monument, close enough to have been easy to miss at ground level but clearly distinguishable from the air. The entire cemetery is protected under a preservation order dating to 1979.
