But this subtle rise is a bowl-barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument in which a central mound, typically covering a burial, is encircled by a surrounding ditch. The ditch here is almost entirely gone; only the east-south-east arc of it survives with any clarity, running to about two metres in width and sinking no more than thirty centimetres below the level of the surrounding ground. To the north-west, it has effectively vanished. The central mound itself measures roughly fourteen metres north to south and twelve and a half metres east to west, giving the whole structure an estimated overall spread of about twenty-one and a half metres.

When David McGuinness surveyed the site in 2012, he noted that the barrow sits on a kind of flattish ledge or low eminence, positioned just eight metres south-west of a different monument type, a platform-barrow, and slightly lower than it. To the south and south-west of the bowl-barrow, the ground drops away sharply. This setting, and the presence of a possible prehistoric burial mound roughly fifty metres to the south-west across a road, begins to suggest something deliberate about the arrangement. Further upslope to the north-east, on the hilltop, three additional barrows have been recorded. All six monuments, taken together, form an approximately linear arrangement running from north-east to south-west across the hillside, which raises the possibility that these were not isolated acts of burial but part of a sustained, organised use of this particular landscape over prehistoric time.
