Barrow – bowl-barrow, Waterstown, Co. Westmeath

On the north-eastern slope of a hill in Waterstown, County Westmeath, a low circular mound sits quietly in the landscape, easy to overlook and easier still to misread as a natural rise in the ground.

It is in fact a bowl-barrow, a type of prehistoric burial monument consisting of a rounded central mound encircled by a shallow ditch, known as a fosse, and in many cases an outer earthen bank beyond that. This example measures roughly 26 metres across its full extent, while the mound itself is about 8 metres in diameter and rises to 2 metres in height, modest dimensions that nonetheless place it among the more complete survivals of its kind in the midlands.

Bowl-barrows belong to a tradition of funerary monument-building stretching across the Bronze Age and into earlier periods, and their siting was rarely accidental. This one commands clear views to the north, east, and south, a positioning that would have given it considerable visual presence in the ancient landscape, whether as a marker for the dead, a territorial signal, or both. The monument has not escaped the wear of the intervening centuries. Digging on the north-eastern side of the mound has caused some disturbance, and the outer bank has been almost entirely levelled on the western side. Old trees have taken root along what remains of the bank, their roots working further into the earthwork over time. A post-medieval field fence, likely dating from the reorganisation of agricultural land in the sixteenth century or later, cuts across the base of the mound on the western side, a reminder of how later farming practice tended to treat ancient earthworks as simply another feature of the terrain to be divided and used.
