Barrow (Ditch barrow), Barberstown, Co. Kildare

In a field at Barberstown in County Kildare, aerial photography has revealed something that would be entirely invisible to anyone walking past: a cluster of ancient burial mounds that left their mark not on the surface of the ground but within it. These are ditch-barrows, a type of prehistoric funerary monument defined by a circular ditch cut into the earth around a central mound, and what makes this particular site quietly arresting is the sheer concentration of them. Nine have been identified in the same field, making it what archaeologists would classify as a barrow cemetery.

The monuments are not visible to the naked eye at ground level. They survive as cropmarks, the faint but legible signatures that buried features leave on growing vegetation during dry conditions, when crops above a filled-in ditch retain moisture slightly differently from those above undisturbed subsoil. Aerial photographs taken in June 2018 captured one barrow here as a circular cropmark roughly thirteen metres in diameter, with a second barrow appearing to attach directly to it at the south-south-east. That kind of pairing, one monument seemingly pressed up against another, hints at a site that was used and added to over a long period, though precisely when these burials were made remains unclear from what is currently known of the site. Barrow cemeteries of this type are generally associated with the Bronze Age, a period spanning roughly 2500 to 500 BC, when the dead were often interred beneath circular earthen mounds, sometimes with grave goods, sometimes clustered together in ways that suggest the landscape itself was being shaped around the memory of particular people or communities.

Because the barrows survive only as subsurface features with no visible upstanding remains, there is nothing to see from the road or on foot. The site is on private agricultural land, and the evidence for it exists almost entirely in the aerial record.
