Rising only fifteen centimetres above the surrounding ground, and spanning roughly five metres in diameter, it is defined by a shallow fosse, a term for a surrounding ditch, just a metre wide and barely ten centimetres deep. Cropmarks and slight undulations of this kind are easily dismissed as natural variation in the land, yet this one is a ditch barrow, a form of prehistoric funerary monument in which the defining feature is not a prominent mound but the encircling ditch itself.

The site was identified during a field inspection in September 2006, and its significance lies partly in its company. Two further ditch barrows sit within thirty metres of it, one to the south and one to the northeast, suggesting that this corner of Tipperary was at some point a place of deliberate, repeated burial or commemoration. Clusters of barrows are not unusual in the Irish prehistoric landscape; they indicate that a location held meaning across generations, accumulating monuments the way a churchyard accumulates headstones. What makes this particular group quietly compelling is how thoroughly that meaning has been absorbed back into the ordinary working countryside, the monuments now indistinguishable from the pasture around them without careful measurement and inspection.
