Barrow (Ditch barrow), Carrowjames, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Carrowjames in County Mayo, a ditch barrow sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of monument that most people walk past without realising what they are looking at.

A ditch barrow is a prehistoric burial mound defined by an encircling ditch rather than an external bank, distinguishing it from the more commonly discussed ring barrow. The ditch itself, cut into the earth around a central mound, was the defining feature of the funerary monument, separating the space of the dead from the surrounding land in a way that was as much symbolic as structural.

Barrows of this type belong broadly to the Bronze Age tradition of burial in Ireland, a period roughly spanning from around 2500 to 500 BC, during which individual or small-group interments beneath earthen mounds became widespread across the island. The townland name Carrowjames derives from the Irish, with "carrow" reflecting the word "ceathrú", meaning a quarter division of land, a unit of Gaelic landholding that points to a long history of organised settlement in the area. Mayo as a county contains numerous prehistoric monuments scattered across its boglands and drumlin fields, many of them poorly documented and some surviving only as low earthworks.

Very little detailed information is currently available about this specific monument beyond its classification and location. What is known is that it has been recorded as a ditch barrow, which is itself a relatively uncommon designation within Irish prehistoric archaeology, making its presence in Carrowjames of quiet interest to anyone concerned with the funerary landscapes of the west of Ireland.
