Barrow (Ditch barrow), Curragh, Co. Kildare

On the open grassland of the Curragh, where the ground rolls northward in a long, unhurried slope, there is a burial monument so slight that it barely registers as a feature of the landscape at all. This ditch barrow, a form of prehistoric funerary enclosure defined not by a mound but by a shallow surrounding ditch, measures only about three metres across its shorter axis and seven metres along its longer one. The fosse, or encircling ditch, is no more than twenty centimetres deep and two to two and a half metres wide, enclosing an oval area that is only very faintly raised above the surrounding ground. What appears to be a low outer bank along part of its western and north-western arc is likely not an original feature at all, but a side-effect of old cultivation ridges running north to south that press against the monument's edge.

What makes this particular barrow quietly arresting is not the monument itself but its company. It sits within a dense cluster of related funerary monuments, with a second ditch barrow lying less than three metres to the north-east, and three further examples within 150 metres to the west and north-west. Two larger ring-barrows, a different but related monument type in which a circular mound is enclosed by a ditch and sometimes an outer bank, stand about forty metres to the south and east. The cumulative effect is of a prehistoric burial landscape, not a single grave but a community of the dead occupying the same gentle hillside over what may have been a considerable span of time. The barrow was identified from aerial photography taken by the Department of Defence in 1999, which is often how such low-lying, poorly preserved earthworks first come to attention, their cropmarks or slight shadows visible from above when they have become all but invisible at ground level.
