Somewhere beneath the fields of Firmount Demesne in County Kildare, the circular outline of a prehistoric burial monument lies hidden just below the surface, invisible to anyone walking above it, yet legible from the sky. What gives it away is a cropmark, the faint but telling difference in how grass or grain grows over buried features, with vegetation above a filled-in ditch often ripening at a slightly different rate or colour than the surrounding land. It is through this subtle signature that a possible ditch-barrow came to light, its circular form approximately eight metres in diameter, caught on aerial photography.

A ditch-barrow is a type of prehistoric funerary monument, typically consisting of a low central mound or flat area enclosed by a circular ditch, the whole structure marking a burial or acting as a ritual focal point in the landscape. The example at Firmount Demesne was identified from Google Earth aerial imagery captured on 28 June 2018, with a curvilinear feature visible to the east of the main circular form suggesting additional complexity, possibly a further enclosing element or related feature. The site was brought to notice by Seán Sourke and compiled by Caimin O'Brien, with the record uploaded in April 2019. Whether the monument dates to the Bronze Age or another period, and what, if anything, survives below ground, remains unknown without excavation.

The cropmark classification carries a note of caution: this is a possible ditch-barrow, not a confirmed one. Aerial photography can reveal extraordinary things, but interpretation has its limits, and without ground-truthing, the feature remains intriguing rather than definitive. That ambiguity is, in its own way, part of what makes it interesting.
