Barrow (Ditch barrow), Friarsfield, Co. Tipperary

At Friarsfield in County Tipperary, a prehistoric burial mound conceals a smaller earthwork within its own interior, a structural arrangement that gives the site an unusual, almost recursive quality.

Rather than a simple mound raised over the dead, what survives here is a ditch barrow, a form in which a circular or near-circular area is enclosed by both an internal bank and a surrounding fosse, or ditch, cut into the ground. The feature recorded at Friarsfield sits inside the northern quadrant of a larger barrow, adding a second layer of complexity to an already carefully constructed monument.

The inner feature takes the form of a raised semi-circular area roughly nine metres north to south and ten metres east to west. It is defined along its northeastern to northwestern arc by a scarp, a steep earthen edge, approximately 1.1 metres wide and 0.35 metres high, while the existing scarp of the outer barrow itself forms the boundary along the northern arc. A narrow but well-defined fosse runs along the same northeastern to northwestern sweep, measuring just under two metres wide and about 0.15 metres deep. Inside this enclosed space the ground is uneven, and a slight curvilinear depression runs roughly concentric with the scarp, set about 1.4 metres inward from it. Whether that depression represents collapse, deliberate shaping, or the slow subsidence of something buried below is not recorded, and the ground keeps that particular detail to itself.
