Barrow (Ditch barrow), Mooresfort, Co. Tipperary

In a field of improved pasture near Mooresfort in County Tipperary, there is a funerary monument so subtle it is essentially invisible at ground level.

A ditch barrow, a prehistoric burial mound defined not by a prominent earthen mound but by a surrounding fosse or ditch, this one measures only six metres across and barely registers as a feature in the landscape. Its encircling fosse is just ten centimetres deep and roughly two and a half metres wide, meaning the whole structure sits almost flush with the surrounding ground. Without knowing what to look for, a person could walk across it without the faintest sense that anything was there.

The site was identified not by fieldwork but from above, through an aerial photograph taken as part of the Bruff 54 survey. Aerial photography has long been one of the more reliable ways to locate low-lying earthworks in Ireland, since differences in soil moisture and crop growth can reveal buried or near-surface features that leave no obvious mark at eye level. The barrow sits above the old flood plain of the river on its western side, and lies to the south-west of a separate oval enclosure, suggesting that this small corner of Tipperary held some significance to the communities who shaped it, even if the precise nature of that significance is now lost. Ditch barrows are broadly understood as burial monuments, their circular form defined by a fosse rather than by a raised mound, and they belong to a tradition of funerary landscape-making that stretches back into prehistory across Ireland.
