Barrow, Duntryleague, Co. Limerick

Some of the most compelling archaeological sites in Ireland are the ones that have essentially ceased to exist above ground, surviving only as entries in scholarly catalogues and faint crop-mark shadows on aerial imagery.

This possible barrow in Duntryleague, County Limerick, is a case in point. Sitting in reclaimed pasture just sixty metres north of the R663 roadway, the site shows no surface remains whatsoever when viewed on Google Earth orthoimages, meaning that centuries of agricultural improvement have all but erased whatever mound or earthwork once marked this spot.

A barrow, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a burial mound, typically dating from the Bronze Age or earlier, constructed to mark a grave and often to signal the presence and prestige of a community in the landscape. This particular site was catalogued as "Duntryleague 11" by Grogan in 1989, appearing in a regional survey that grouped it alongside a cluster of related monuments in the area. A second possible barrow, recorded separately with the reference LI049-220, lies approximately eighty-five metres to the south-east, suggesting that this corner of Limerick may once have formed part of a wider funerary or ceremonial landscape. Neither site appears on historic Ordnance Survey Ireland maps, which likely reflects the degree to which both had already been reduced by land use before systematic mapping began in the nineteenth century.

For anyone curious enough to seek out the general vicinity, the site lies close to the R663 in an area of ordinary working farmland. There is nothing to see at the spot itself, and access to private agricultural land would of course require the landowner's permission. The value here is less in visiting than in knowing the site exists: that a field of reclaimed pasture in County Limerick carries, somewhere beneath its surface, the possible traces of a prehistoric burial, noted once in print and now quietly awaiting whatever future investigation, aerial survey, or ground-penetrating technology might eventually bring it back into view.
