Barrows
On a hillside in the townland of Knockaun in County Mayo, there sits a barrow, one of those low, rounded burial mounds that the Irish landscape quietly accumulates without much fuss or fanfare.
A barrow is essentially a prehistoric earthen mound raised over one or more burials, sometimes covering a stone chamber, sometimes not, and the tradition of constructing them spans thousands of years across Ireland and Britain. This particular example in Knockaun is recorded as a monument, which is itself a kind of distinction: it has been noticed, classified, given a place in the official count of the country's archaeological remains. Beyond that, the record is almost entirely silent.
