No dramatic mound, no visible stones, no commanding hilltop position. The central area of this circular monument sits at exactly the same level as the surrounding field, meaning that from a short distance it could pass entirely unnoticed. What marks it out, to a careful eye, is a subtle bank along the edge of that central platform, only ten centimetres high and less than three metres wide, and a flat-bottomed fosse, or encircling ditch, just twenty centimetres deep. The whole structure measures twenty metres across. Understatement, in prehistoric monument terms, does not come more complete than this.

The site was recorded by Timoney in 1984 and cross-referenced with earlier work by Burenhult, who catalogued it as Structure 70, Knocknahur North. One of the more telling pieces of analysis concerns what the monument is not. Soil phosphate testing produced very low readings, which argues against the site ever having functioned as a hut or dwelling; accumulated animal and human activity tends to leave phosphate signatures in the ground over time, and their absence here points instead toward a funerary or ceremonial purpose. A barrow, in its broadest sense, is a mounded or enclosed burial monument, and while this example lacks any pronounced external bank, the combination of a defined central area and a surrounding ditch is consistent with that tradition. The landscape around Knocknahur is part of the wider megalithic corridor of north Sligo, a region dense with prehistoric activity, which gives even this quiet and easily overlooked feature a meaningful context.
