What makes it quietly interesting is how it came to be noticed at all, and what that noticing might mean. It was first identified not on the ground but from above, spotted on an aerial photograph taken on 16 July 1971 as part of the Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography survey. Seen from the air, it read as a circular feature, the kind of mark that can indicate a cropmark enclosure, where buried walls or ditches cause the vegetation above them to grow differently. Closer examination suggested something else: not a cropmark at all, but a physical depression in the earth.

What that depression might be is where things get more unusual. The site sits within a landscape dense with ring-ditches, circular earthwork monuments typically associated with Bronze Age burial and ritual, and that context shifts how the hollow reads. A pond barrow is a rare type of prehistoric funerary monument, defined by a central circular depression rather than a mound, usually surrounded by a bank or ditch. They are not common, and identifying one with confidence requires more than an aerial photograph. The assessment here is careful: the location within a ring-ditch complex makes a pond barrow a reasonable possibility, but it remains tentative. The surrounding monuments, catalogued under multiple site references, suggest this corner of the Nore valley was used intensively for burial or ceremonial activity at some point in prehistory, which gives even an ambiguous depression a certain weight.
