Barrow (Ring Barrow), Ballycomisk, Co. Tipperary

At roughly 500 feet above sea level on the southern end of a ridge in County Tipperary, a large oval mound sits in pasture with commanding views in every direction.

What makes this particular prehistoric burial monument quietly arresting is not just its elevation but the layered complexity of what survives: a ring barrow, which is a burial mound encircled by a fosse and outer bank, that has been shaped, interrupted, and partially absorbed by the working landscape around it over millennia.

The mound itself measures approximately 38 metres along its north-northwest to south-southeast axis and 34 metres across. It is defined by a scarp, a slope or step cut into the ground surface, best preserved along its northeastern to southeastern arc, and there is a possible causeway, a raised crossing over the surrounding ditch, on the western side. The fosse, the encircling ditch that is a defining feature of ring barrows, is most legible along the same northeastern to southeastern stretch, where it reaches nearly eight metres in overall width. On the southeastern to south-southwestern side, a curvilinear field boundary cuts directly through it, though intriguingly the boundary follows the curve of the fosse rather than cutting across it at an angle, suggesting that whoever laid out the field boundary was, at some level, conscious of what was already there. An outer bank survives in scant form to the southwest and west-northwest. At the centre of the monument, set slightly off to the south-southeast, is a gentle oval depression roughly 14 metres by 12 metres, now covered in nettles, which is the kind of feature that aerial photography, taken in this case in August 1996, makes far more legible than a ground-level walk across the grass.
