Barrow (Ring Barrow), Barrahaurin, Co. Cork

Something marked on three successive Ordnance Survey maps across nearly a century has since vanished entirely from the ground.

The ring barrow that once straddled the townland boundary between Barrahaurin and Kilmartin Upper in mid Cork appears on the six-inch OS maps of 1842, 1904, and 1939, each time rendered as a hachured circular enclosure of roughly twenty metres in diameter. Today there is no visible surface trace. The monument has been levelled, leaving only the cartographic record as evidence that it was ever there.

A ring barrow is a burial mound of prehistoric date, typically defined by a low earthen bank encircling a central area, sometimes with a shallow ditch, or fosse, between the bank and the interior. When a researcher named Hartnett visited and recorded this example in 1939, the outer bank still stood to roughly a metre in height and about three metres in width. The interior was waterlogged, and a slight inner fosse was still discernible. That a monument documented in that condition could subsequently disappear without surface trace is itself a reminder of how quickly earthworks can be lost to agriculture and land improvement. Notably, a stone row sits approximately twenty-five metres to the south-west. Stone rows are linear arrangements of standing stones whose purpose remains debated, but their repeated proximity to funerary monuments across the Cork and Kerry landscape suggests a deliberate spatial relationship, though exactly what that relationship meant to the people who created it remains unknown.
