But in the southeast quadrant of this small prehistoric enclosure near the Caha River in west Cork, that depression is almost certainly what remains of a burial. The structure surrounding it is a ring barrow, a form of funerary monument common across Bronze Age Ireland, in which a circular area is enclosed by a ditch, known as a fosse, and an outer earthen bank. The dead, or their cremated remains, were placed within.

This particular example sits in rough grazing land, 54 metres east of the Caha River. It is modest in scale, measuring 6.7 metres north to south and 6.6 metres east to west, enclosed by a fosse roughly 45 centimetres deep with an external bank rising about 40 centimetres above the surrounding ground. What lifts it slightly above the merely typical is its layout: there is a formal entrance on the southeast side, about a metre wide, with a causeway left uncut across the fosse so that a person could actually walk in. The interior is otherwise level, and a natural platform of ground adjoins the outer bank from the southeast around to the south-southeast, which may have made the site feel more deliberate, even ceremonial, in its relationship to the local topography. These details, the directional entrance, the interior depression, the way the natural landform is incorporated, suggest that whoever built this chose their location with some care, though what drew them to this particular bend of the river, and precisely when, is no longer recoverable.
