Barrow (Ring Barrow), Duncummin, Co. Tipperary

In a wet, level pasture in County Tipperary, a small circular earthwork sits so quietly in the landscape that most people walking past would take it for a natural undulation in the ground.

It is, in fact, a ring-barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument consisting of a low central mound or platform enclosed by a circular ditch and an outer bank. This particular example at Duncummin measures only about four metres across, making it a modest specimen, but its modest scale does nothing to diminish what it represents: a deliberate act of burial or commemoration carried out in the distant past, the precise date of which has not been recorded.

The monument survives as a circular area enclosed by an earthen scarp, a shallow fosse or ditch, and a low external bank. The outer bank reaches only a few centimetres above the surrounding ground on its exterior face, and the fosse at its base is just forty centimetres wide, so the whole thing sits very gently on the land rather than projecting above it with any drama. What makes the site particularly interesting is its context: it does not stand alone. Another ring-barrow lies immediately to the north-north-west, and others are recorded nearby, suggesting that this corner of Tipperary was once a significant area for funerary activity, a loose prehistoric cemetery spread across what is now ordinary agricultural ground. The monument is situated on the north-west side of a field system, and where the two ring-barrows come closest together, the one at Duncummin abuts the southern edge of its neighbour, hinting that they were laid out in deliberate relation to one another. The interior of this barrow is level and clear of overgrowth, but a modern field drain running from south-east to north-west has cut through the fosse and outer bank on that side, removing a section of the enclosing earthwork and leaving the interior edge defined at that point only by the rounded corner of the drain itself, a reminder of how routinely such monuments are altered or partially erased by everyday land management.
