Barrow (Ring Barrow), Grannagh, Co. Galway

A Bronze or Iron Age burial site that has been excavated twice, yielded gaming pieces and glass beads, and then simply ceased to exist is unusual enough.

The ring barrow at Grannagh in County Galway is now gone entirely, quarried away until no surface trace remains, yet the record of what it once contained is precise enough to make that absence feel genuinely strange.

A ring barrow is a low, circular funerary mound surrounded by a ditch, or fosse, and an outer earthen bank, a form of monument associated broadly with the Iron Age in Ireland, though the tradition of raising earthworks over the dead has much older roots. The Grannagh example measured roughly 15.6 metres in diameter, with a flat-topped central mound about 5.3 metres across and 0.6 metres high. R. A. S. Macalister excavated it partially in 1916, digging into a central area of around 1.5 metres and finding three scattered, unprotected cremations alongside glass beads and a fragment of a bone pin. He proposed an Iron Age date. The site was then re-examined in 1969 by E. Rynne, whose more extensive investigation uncovered traces of between seven and nine cremations, the majority concentrated in the fosse at the north-west and south-east. Rynne's finds extended the picture considerably: fragments of fibulae, the small metal clasps used to fasten clothing in the Iron Age, along with glass and bone beads and, perhaps most evocatively, a gaming piece. The barrow sat in pastureland roughly 30 metres to the north-west of a much larger ring barrow, the two forming what must once have been a quietly purposeful pair in the landscape. An aerial photograph from 1970 still captured both. Sometime after that, the smaller of the two was quarried out of existence.
