Barrow (Ring Barrow), Island, Co. Mayo

On a low hillock in the townland of Island, County Mayo, a prehistoric burial monument that survived for perhaps three or four thousand years was gone by the spring of 2017.

Not gradually worn away, not quietly robbed for stone, but entirely levelled. The ring barrow, a form of funerary monument consisting of a central burial mound encircled by a shallow ditch (the fosse) and an outer earthen bank, had stood long enough to be formally recorded in 1998. Nineteen years later, nothing remained.

At the time of its 1998 inspection, the monument was modest in scale but coherent in form. The central mound measured roughly 2.4 metres north to south and 2.6 metres east to west, rising just 0.35 metres above the surrounding ground. Around it ran a fosse about 1.2 metres wide, and beyond that an external bank between 2 and 2.5 metres wide, giving the whole structure an overall diameter of around 9 metres. The outer bank had already begun to soften and merge with the natural hillslope, and the eastern side showed signs of disturbance, having been partly dug away. The hillock on which it sat commanded wide views across undulating County Mayo farmland, with Croagh Patrick to the west and Nephin Mountain to the northwest, though both were obscured by trees at the time of inspection. A second barrow was visible on a rise about 200 metres to the south-southwest, suggesting this was once a meaningful place in a wider prehistoric landscape.

The complete levelling of the site between 1998 and 2017 leaves it as an absence rather than a place to visit. What can be said is that ring barrows of this type are found across Ireland and Britain, and their positioning on elevated ground with broad sightlines is a recurring feature, one that speaks to how prehistoric communities understood and marked their landscape. The companion barrow to the south-southwest remains, for now, on its own prominent rise.
