It is, in fact, a ring barrow, a prehistoric burial monument consisting of a raised central platform enclosed by a shallow ditch and an outer earthen bank. What lifts this particular example out of the ordinary is not its size, which is modest, roughly six metres across and just over half a metre high, but the four stones lying on its surface, arranged in a rough square. Whether they are the remnants of a burial structure, a later marker, or something else entirely, the notes do not say, and that ambiguity is part of what makes the place quietly arresting.

Ring barrows are found across Ireland and Britain and are generally associated with the Bronze Age, though some date to the Iron Age. They typically covered burials, sometimes containing cremated remains, pottery, or personal objects, though many have been disturbed or have yielded little to excavation. The Kishkeam example measures approximately six metres north to south and six and a half metres east to west, with an internal bank height of around 0.75 metres and a more modest external rise of 0.35 metres. The four stones on the interior surface range in length from about half a metre to just under a metre. Adding further interest is the presence of a second ring barrow located roughly eight metres to the south-east, making this a paired monument in a landscape that clearly held significance for the communities who shaped it, even if that significance is now largely unreadable.
