Barrow (Ring Barrow), Knocknamena Commons, Co. Tipperary

On the high ground of Knocknamena Commons in County Tipperary, a prehistoric burial monument has spent centuries slowly disappearing back into the earth.

The site is a ring barrow, a form of funerary mound typically dating from the Bronze Age, constructed as a low circular earthwork surrounded by a fosse, which is a shallow ditch, and an outer bank. What remains here is a mound measuring roughly eight metres across, enclosed by a fosse around two metres wide and barely twenty centimetres deep at its outer edge, with only faint traces of the surrounding bank still legible in the landscape. The place asks a great deal of its visitors in the way of imagination.

At some point, a field boundary was cut straight through the monument on a north-south axis, bisecting the mound and compounding the damage that time and agricultural activity had already done. That boundary has since been levelled, removing one layer of intrusion, but the monument itself remains in a much degraded state. The elevated position does at least preserve something of the original logic of the place. Ring barrows of this type were frequently sited on prominent ground, visible across wide stretches of countryside, and the commons here still commands broad panoramic views in all directions, giving some sense of why this particular hill was chosen, presumably long before anyone thought to run a field wall through it.

The site presents a practical curiosity for anyone hoping to find it: it is barely visible in winter and, according to the available record, probably not visible at all during summer when vegetation is in growth. That narrow seasonal window between the two, when the ground cover is low but the grass has not yet died back entirely, may offer the best chance of reading the slight undulations that mark what survives.
