It is a ring barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument consisting of a central area enclosed by a ditch and an outer bank, and this one is modest even by the standards of its kind. The circular interior measures roughly six metres across, the surrounding fosse is barely fifteen centimetres deep, and the outer bank rises only a few centimetres above the surrounding field. The whole thing was first identified not by someone walking the land but by an aerial photograph, which caught the cropmark of the ring-ditch from above.

Ring barrows are generally associated with the Bronze Age, though some belong to the Iron Age, and they are thought to mark burials or ceremonial activity. This example sits on a gentle west-facing slope of a low rise, with its interior dropping slightly toward the west in line with the natural gradient of the hillside. On the eastern side, the interior sits around twelve centimetres below the surrounding ground level, the result of the monument being cut into the slope at that point. The outer bank, most visible on the western and south-eastern arc, would once have been more pronounced; what survives today has been considerably reduced, almost certainly by centuries of agricultural activity in what is now long-established pasture. A wet area lies to the north-east, a detail that may once have had significance in how the site was situated in relation to its surroundings.
