Barrow (Ring Barrow), Lisconly, Co. Galway

On an east-facing slope in the undulating grassland of Lisconly, a large ring barrow sits quietly beside a byroad, its circular form still legible despite decades of encroachment by overgrowth and field clearance.

A ring barrow is a prehistoric burial monument, typically consisting of a low central mound or platform enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches. This example is substantial: the inner bank measures roughly 54 metres east to west and 53.5 metres north to south, with a flat central area, an internal fosse (or ditch), a second intervening fosse, and an outer bank beyond that. The overall structure suggests considerable original ambition, even if much of it is now difficult to read on the ground.

The northern and eastern sections of the enclosing elements have been almost entirely lost, and the likely cause is mundane rather than ancient. Road widening carried out in 1972 appears to have removed whatever survived along that arc of the monument. An Ordnance Survey map from 1932, the third edition of the six-inch series, records small gaps at the east and south, and the eastern gap may correspond to a water-filled hollow that still sits on the line of the inner fosse and bank. That same year as the road works, 1972, a small rescue excavation was conducted by Champion and Champion on the northern enclosing elements, though the results were described as inconclusive. The monument is also referenced in John Waddell's 1977 work on Irish barrows, placing it within a broader tradition of Bronze Age funerary monuments found across the country.

The barrow lies immediately south-west of the byroad, so it is broadly visible from the roadside, though overgrowth means the full extent of its earthworks requires some patience to appreciate. The water-filled hollow on the eastern side, if still present, offers one of the clearer physical traces of the original fosse line.
