Yet here, at Rahaneena, a ring barrow, a type of funerary earthwork typically consisting of a circular mound or flat area enclosed by a ditch and bank, occupies exactly that precarious position on the northern bank of the estuary. The monument is roughly 19 metres in diameter, defined by a deep, steep-sided fosse, which is simply the archaeological term for a ditch, with an earthen bank running along its outer edge. The interior is uneven, and to the south-west, where the ground meets the cliff edge, only faint traces of the fosse survive.

The site carries a small but telling documentary discrepancy. Writing in 1912, Redington described what appeared to be a circular bank within the monument itself, suggesting the remains of an internal feature. By 1952, however, McCaffrey could find no such internal bank, recording only its absence. Whether the feature had been lost to erosion, agricultural disturbance, or was simply misread in the earlier account is not clear. What is clear is that the monument has been quietly diminishing over time. A laneway now cuts directly across it from south-east to north-west, bisecting the earthwork and accelerating whatever gradual losses the cliff edge had already begun. Ring barrows are generally associated with Bronze Age burial practice, serving as territorial or commemorative markers for the dead, and their placement on prominent or liminal ground, overlooking water, was rarely accidental.
