Barrow (Ring Barrow), Tully, Co. Longford

Sitting in the flood-plain of a small stream in County Longford, this low earthen mound could easily be mistaken for a natural rise in the ground.

It is anything but. What lies in this quiet corner of Tully is a ring barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument consisting of a central mound enclosed by a surrounding ditch and bank, constructed to mark the burial of the dead. The example here is modest in scale but structurally complete enough to read clearly: a circular mound of earth and stone roughly eighteen metres across at its base and just under a metre high, its flat top enclosed by the fragmentary remains of a low earthen bank. Around the mound runs a shallow fosse, a ditch, between three and three and a half metres wide, and beyond that a second bank with traces of a further outer ditch visible along its south-eastern to western arc.

The site carries a small historical irony. When the Ordnance Survey mapped this part of Ireland in 1837, the monument was recorded on their six-inch map as a circular enclosure and labelled simply as a "Fort", a common misidentification at the time, when the surveyors were working quickly across an unfamiliar landscape and reaching for the nearest available category. Ring barrows date generally to the Bronze Age or early Iron Age, and their purpose was funerary rather than defensive, though the concentric earthworks can superficially suggest fortification. The original entrance to the Tully example is no longer recognisable, which is not unusual; centuries of agricultural use, weathering, and the soft, damp conditions of a river flood-plain tend to erode precisely the kinds of subtle surface details that would once have marked a formal approach to the monument.
