Somewhere in the townland of Ballybarney, in County Kildare, the land carries a designation that most fields and hedgerows never earn: battlefield. The name alone raises questions. Kildare has no shortage of contested ground, sitting as it does on routes that armies, settlers, and rebels have crossed for centuries, but a formally recognised battlefield site without a widely known story attached to it is a curious thing, a place where violence or organised conflict was considered significant enough to record, yet whose details remain largely out of public reach.
