Beauparc Railway Station, Painestown, Co. Meath

The building at Beauparc does something you rarely see on Ireland's rail network: it puts two functions and two levels into one structure, stepped down a sloping site so that a basement storey emerges at one end while the upper floors sit level with the platform.

Gable-fronted and dated 1857, it served simultaneously as railway station and station master's house, a combined arrangement that made practical sense on smaller lines but has mostly vanished as stations were rebuilt, abandoned, or converted. Here, the dual identity survives in the fabric itself, visible in how the building negotiates its own change in level.

The materials tell their own story of quiet ambition for what was, after all, a modest rural halt. Render covers the basement walls, but above the limestone string course, which is a horizontal course of stone marking the transition between storeys, the upper floors switch to red brick, itself framed with raised brick surrounds around the window openings. A carved timber barge board, the decorative trim following the slope of the gable, adds a touch of ornament rarely lavished on purely functional buildings. Over the door, a limestone plaque carries the 1857 date, flanked by timber sash side lights and set behind a timber panelled door that survives from the original build. To the west, a single-storey block extends the footprint over its own basement, while a red brick chimneystack rises through the slate roof.

Outside, the station's working past is still legible in the ground. Limestone walls and kerbs mark the line of the former platform, and rock-faced limestone piers and walls define the edges of the site, the rough-hewn stone finish giving them a sturdier, less refined look than the dressed limestone of the plaque. A cast-iron pier for a level crossing remains in place too, a small but telling survival from the days when trains and road traffic had to be actively managed at the same crossing point rather than separated by bridges. The building now serves as a private house, but the platform edges, the crossing pier, and the two-tier massing of the structure itself keep the railway origins readable on the site.
