Blessed Bush, Kilweelran, Co. Clare

A blackthorn tree draped in ivy, fenced inside a small copse of ash, with a spring rising at its foot: the combination is modest enough to pass unnoticed, yet this particular spot in Kilweelran, County Clare, has been considered sacred for long enough that Ordnance Survey cartographers thought it worth naming on their six-inch maps in both 1842 and 1915.

The designation "Blessed Bush" appears on both editions, which means the site was already well enough established in local memory by the mid-nineteenth century to be treated as a fixed landmark rather than a passing piece of folklore.

Blessed bushes, most commonly hawthorn or blackthorn, occupy a particular place in Irish devotional geography. They are trees associated with a specific quality of sanctity, often linked to a nearby water source or to patterns of communal prayer, and they were left untouched even when land around them was cleared or drained. Here, the spring that emerges just south of the old blackthorn now feeds a small concrete water tank, a practical adaptation that suggests the water was still being drawn on within living memory, even as the original ritual context faded. A dry stream bed runs along the western side, tracing where the outflow once went. The site does not exist in isolation: a mound lies roughly thirty metres to the south, a children's burial ground known as a cillín sits about a hundred and eighty metres to the south-southwest, and an enclosure is recorded around a hundred metres to the north-northeast. A cillín was typically an unconsecrated burial place used for unbaptised infants, and the clustering of such features around a blessed bush is not unusual; these were liminal places, set apart from ordinary ground, where different kinds of sacred purpose accumulated over time.
