Burial Sites
At Ballybackagh in County Galway there is a monument that belongs to one of Irish prehistory's more quietly puzzling categories: the boulder-burial.
Unlike the familiar portal tombs or passage cairns that draw most attention, boulder-burials are a less celebrated funerary form, consisting essentially of a large, often massive, boulder raised on a small number of supporting stones, creating a low chamber beneath. They are concentrated in the southwest of Ireland, particularly in Cork and Kerry, though outlying examples appear elsewhere, and their presence in Connacht is itself a detail worth pausing on. The type is generally assigned to the Bronze Age, and while their precise ritual function remains debated, the working assumption is that they served as places of burial or commemoration for the dead.
