Boulder-burials are among the more quietly puzzling monuments of prehistoric Ireland: a substantial stone, usually of notable size or striking material, raised slightly off the ground on smaller support stones and understood by archaeologists to mark a burial beneath. This one is built from quartz, a material the prehistoric Irish returned to again and again in funerary and ceremonial contexts, perhaps for the way it catches light, perhaps for reasons we can no longer recover.

The boulder itself measures 2.64 metres by 1.68 metres and stands 1.45 metres tall, resting on a support stone to its western side and on a bed of smaller stones beneath. A quartz stone lies under the eastern edge, adding a degree of deliberate arrangement that sets this apart from any accidental grouping. What gives the site an added layer of interest is the former presence of a standing stone nearby, now gone. The pairing of a boulder-burial with a standing stone suggests this corner of Cork once formed part of a wider ceremonial landscape, the individual monuments functioning together in ways that are difficult to reconstruct but hard to dismiss as coincidental.
