Boulder-burial, Dunmanus, Co. Cork

At the edge of Dunmanus Harbour in West Cork, a large flat-topped boulder sits propped above the ground on three support stones, regularly swamped by high tides and half-lost in a swampy field.

It is not a dolmen in the classic sense, though the arrangement is superficially similar. It is classified as a boulder-burial, a monument type found almost exclusively along the southwestern coast of Ireland, in which a large natural or roughly shaped boulder is raised above the surface on smaller uprights, almost certainly as a marker for human remains placed beneath.

This particular example is a subrectangular slab measuring roughly 2.4 metres by 1.9 metres and standing about 0.9 metres above the ground on its three support stones. It sits just south of a small river mouth where that watercourse meets Dunmanus Harbour, in ground that floods with the tides. Boulder-burials as a class are generally associated with the Bronze Age, though dating individual examples is difficult without excavation. The West Cork coastline holds an unusual concentration of them, and scholars including Seán Ó Nualláin and John Roberts documented this site in the late twentieth century as part of a broader effort to catalogue the type across the region.

The setting makes the monument genuinely difficult to access and easy to overlook. The field is described as swampy and subject to tidal flooding, so the ground underfoot is unreliable depending on season and recent weather. The boulder itself, once found, is the thing to examine closely: the way three modest stones hold up a slab of that weight, positioned just above the waterlogged earth, raises questions about both the engineering instincts and the beliefs of whoever chose this particular spot.
