Burial Sites

Boulder-burial, Mushera, Co. Cork

There is something quietly disquieting about a burial site that has vanished entirely from view.

In flat pasture along the south-western side of the Owenbaun River valley, near the north-western foot of Musheramore Mountain in County Cork, at least three boulder-burials once stood. Boulder-burials are a form of prehistoric funerary monument, most commonly found in Munster, in which a large glacial boulder is placed over or beside a pit or cist containing human remains. Today, not one of them leaves so much as a ripple in the grass.

The earliest written record of the site comes from the Ordnance Survey Name Book of 1841, which noted the presence of three such monuments at this location, in the townland of Lackadotia. By the time Seán Ó Nualláin documented the site in 1978, the monuments had already been reduced to a catalogue entry. Whether the boulders were removed for field clearance, absorbed into boundary walls, or simply buried under centuries of agricultural activity is not recorded. What remains on the surface is a standing stone, approximately sixty metres to the north, set into a townland boundary fence. Standing stones are a common accompaniment to prehistoric funerary and ceremonial landscapes in Cork and Kerry, and its survival so close to the recorded burial site is at least suggestive of a once more elaborate arrangement across this stretch of ground.

There is little for a visitor to see in any conventional sense. The pasture holds no visible trace. The standing stone to the north, embedded in a boundary fence, is the one surviving physical anchor to what the 1841 surveyors observed. The interest here is largely archaeological and conceptual, a place that repays attention precisely because of what has been lost and what the flat, ordinary-looking field once contained.
