Boundary mound, Bruckana, Co. Kilkenny

Sometimes the most intriguing archaeological sites are the ones that are no longer quite there.

In the flat bogland of Bruckana, on the border between County Kilkenny and County Tipperary, a mound was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1900, named and plotted with the quiet confidence of Victorian cartography. When the site was later visited in person, no mound could be found. The bogland, which was being actively worked by Bord na Móna, the Irish state company responsible for large-scale peat extraction through much of the twentieth century, had apparently swallowed whatever was once there, or perhaps the feature had never been quite what the mapmakers assumed.

The original surveyors who produced those six-inch maps in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were extraordinarily thorough, and minor earthworks, boundary features, and artificial mounds were routinely captured in their work. What exactly they were recording at Bruckana is now uncertain. One possibility is that the marked mound was associated with a nearby trigonometrical station, and may have served as a sappers station, a small constructed platform or marker used by military surveyors, the sappers being soldiers of the Royal Engineers, to establish fixed reference points across the landscape. Such markers were a practical necessity for the triangulation surveys that underpinned the entire Ordnance Survey mapping project, and they were sometimes built up as low earthen mounds to give surveyors a clear sightline across otherwise featureless terrain. Flat bogland, with its unbroken horizon, was exactly the kind of ground where such a station would have been useful, and equally the kind of ground where later industrial cutting could erase surface features entirely.
