Boundary mound, Cuddoo, Co. Galway

In the townland of Cuddoo, in County Galway, there sits a boundary mound, the kind of earthwork that tends to go unnoticed precisely because it looks, at first glance, like nothing more than a rise in the ground.

Boundary mounds are among the quieter survivals of the Irish landscape, built or adapted over centuries to mark the edges of territories, parishes, estates, or landholdings. They lack the drama of a ringfort or a tower house, but they encode something just as significant, the human need to say: this side is mine, that side is yours.
