Boundary mound, Gortnalone, Co. Galway
Co. Galway |
Ritual/Ceremonial
In the townland of Gortnalone in County Galway, a low mound sits in the landscape doing the quiet work it was always meant to do: marking a boundary.
These earthen markers, raised to define the edges of land holdings, parishes, or estates, were once a common feature of the Irish countryside. Many have been ploughed out, built over, or simply forgotten. The fact that this one has been formally recorded as an archaeological monument at all suggests it has survived with enough presence to be noticed.
