Bridge, Ballinillane, Co. Kerry

A small detail in the construction of this road bridge over the Gweestin River in County Kerry quietly gives away a longer history than the structure might first suggest.

Set on a northwest to southeast axis, the bridge carries a road across the river on two semicircular arches, each spanning roughly 4.5 metres, built from random rubble sandstone with roughly shaped voussoirs, the wedge-shaped stones that lock an arch together and distribute its load. What draws the eye is the low pointed cutwater on the upstream face of the central pier, built not from sandstone like the rest of the bridge but from limestone ashlar, that is, precisely cut and dressed stone. The difference in material and finish suggests the cutwater was added at a later date than the original construction, a repair or reinforcement introduced to deflect the force of the river current away from the pier.

The bridge also has a segmental dry arch on the flood plain to the southeast, spanning about 1.85 metres. A dry arch of this kind is a secondary opening built at a lower level to allow floodwater to pass through without overwhelming the main structure; finding one here points to a river that regularly runs high and fast. The parapets along the top of the bridge are finished with vertical stone coping, a simple but deliberate detail that ties the whole structure together. Taken together, the mixed materials and the flood arch suggest a crossing that has been tended and adjusted over time, each intervention responding to what the Gweestin River demanded of it.
