Known in Irish as An Cheallúnach or An Lisín, the site incorporates the remains of Ballintaggart church and an old burial ground, and the enclosure itself, roughly circular in plan, is the kind of feature that suggests early ecclesiastical or even pre-Christian origins, though the precise date of its founding is not recorded.

What makes the site quietly strange is the scatter of funerary material surrounding it. Approximately thirteen metres to the east of the enclosure lies a low cairn of stones, notable for containing a significant amount of quartz, a material with longstanding ritual associations in Irish prehistoric contexts. Beyond that cairn, early Ordnance Survey letters recorded what were described as 'other tombs with great unshapen stones half buried', a phrase that conjures something half-forgotten and half-reclaimed by the ground. A feature catalogued separately as a 'site of a building' is thought to refer to one or other of these latter features, meaning what appears at first to be a distinct structure may simply be another expression of the same funerary landscape spreading eastward from the enclosure. The cluster of monuments here, a church site, a burial ground, a cairn, and rough stone tombs, suggests the hillock served as a place of significance across more than one period of use. The description of the site draws on J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, Corca Dhuibhne, one of the more thoroughly documented stretches of the Irish archaeological landscape given its extraordinary density of monuments.
