Building, Cashel, Co. Mayo

On a raised platform in County Mayo, the outlines of something built in stone survive just well enough to resist easy interpretation.

What exactly stood here has been a matter of polite uncertainty for well over a century, the remains being too fragmentary to read clearly yet persistent enough to keep demanding attention.

The site sits within what is thought to be a cashel, an early medieval stone-walled enclosure of the kind used across Ireland as a fortified farmstead or ringfort. Writing in 1911, the antiquarian H. Knox noted foundations of stone buildings on top of the cashel platform, adding the careful qualification that there was "nothing quite definite" about them. That assessment has not much changed. A low, poorly defined rise in the western half of the enclosure, measuring somewhere between seven and ten metres across, is likely where those foundations lie. On its eastern side a faint scarp runs roughly north to south, and at the northwest a short section of low, sod-covered stony bank, barely half a metre high and about one and a half metres wide, curves away before being cut short by a subrectangular pit dug into the northwest sector of the platform. The pit, roughly eleven metres east to west and five metres north to south, drops to about 1.2 metres at its western end. Whether it is a later intrusion or connected in some way to the original activity on the platform is not clear.

What the site illustrates, perhaps as well as anything, is how much of early Irish settlement archaeology exists in this condition: present enough to be recorded, ambiguous enough to resist confident reconstruction. Knox saw something; later survey confirmed something; but the precise nature of the building or buildings that once occupied this corner of Mayo remains, for now, an open question.
