Building, Kilmurry, Co. Kildare

A farmer ploughing a gently sloping pasture field in Kilmurry, County Kildare, in 1986 turned up something unexpected: the mortared-stone wall foundations of a substantial square structure, along with fragments of mortar still bearing the pressed impressions of wickerwork. That wickerwork was centring, the temporary framework of woven branches or rods used to support an arch or vault while the mortar sets around it. Its survival, even in fragment form, is a quiet kind of accident, the kind of physical trace that normally vanishes entirely.

The structure itself measured roughly twenty metres on each side, and above ground today there is almost nothing to show for it. A low, nearly square earthwork, defined by a barely perceptible scarp rising no more than thirty centimetres at its highest, corresponds closely to the building's estimated footprint. A short distance to the north, similar low scarps trace what appear to be the southern and eastern boundaries of an associated field, running for over thirty metres along each side. Taken together, the buried foundations, the mortar evidence, the earthwork enclosure, and the traces of a field boundary suggest the remains of a late-medieval farmstead, the kind of modest agricultural holding that once was common across the Irish countryside and has largely been absorbed back into the land without record or ceremony.

What makes the Kilmurry site quietly arresting is precisely its ordinariness. This was not a church, a tower house, or a defended enclosure. It was, most likely, where someone farmed, sheltered livestock, and built in stone with enough skill to require properly formed arches. The plough that disturbed it also preserved the only detailed account we have of what lies beneath that unassuming slope.
