Building, Kiltarnaght, Co. Mayo

On the boundary between the townlands of Kiltarnaght and Aghadooey Glebe in County Mayo, a single old wall stands beside a private access road, its identity still unresolved after decades of enquiry.

It has been called a castle. It has been called a mill. Officially, it is listed simply as a building, which says something about how much remains unknown.

The wall was first formally recorded by Liam Price, a scholar who died in 1967, in an unpublished field report that was never dated. Price measured a mortared stone structure running on a roughly north-south axis, approximately thirteen metres long, 2.7 metres high, and just under a metre wide. He noted that the facing stones on the west side had been robbed out, a common fate for old masonry in rural Ireland, where dressed stone was routinely reused in later buildings and field walls. The ground on the east side sat about two metres higher than the west, which had the effect of burying much of the eastern face while keeping the upper portions of the wall visible. When Price asked locally what the structure was, he was told it was "a bit of a wall of a castle." A site inspection carried out in July 2015 found the wall still standing, though now measuring 11.5 metres in length, with a modern stone wall built flush against its robbed-out western face. The eastern side had become so overgrown it could not be examined properly. By that point, local tradition had shifted its account somewhat: the wall, some said, was the remains of a mill rather than a castle. Both explanations are plausible for a structure of this type near a boundary stream, and neither has been confirmed.
