Building, Mullamast, Co. Kildare

In a field near Mullamast in County Kildare, a rectangle of discoloured crop betrays something buried beneath the soil. Measuring approximately fifteen metres north to south and seventeen metres east to west, the feature is invisible at ground level but resolves clearly from above, visible in aerial imagery captured in June 2018. No wall stands here, no earthen bank rises from the grass; only the differential growth of whatever crop happens to be in the field gives away that something once occupied this patch of ground.

Cropmarks form when buried structures affect the moisture and nutrient levels available to plants above them. Walls and compacted surfaces tend to stunt growth, producing parchmarks in dry conditions, while ditches and pits retain water and produce lusher, taller growth. The rectangular outline at Mullamast falls into this category of ghostly architectural evidence, and its regular shape suggests a deliberate, probably built structure rather than a natural feature. It sits roughly 550 metres west of a second cropmark, catalogued separately, that has been tentatively identified as the remains of a house site. Whether the Mullamast example served a similar domestic function is unconfirmed, but the proximity and shared morphology of the two features make the comparison a reasonable starting point for any future investigation.
