Bullaun, An Teanach, Co. Mayo

Holy Sites & Wells
A bullaun is one of the quieter puzzles of the Irish landscape: a boulder or outcrop of rock bearing one or more deliberately hollowed depressions, ground smooth over centuries by human hands.
They are found all over Ireland, often near early ecclesiastical sites, and while some have been linked to cursing rituals or healing traditions, others resist easy explanation. The example recorded at An Teanach in County Mayo belongs to this scattered, understated category of monument, the kind that sits in a field or beside a ruined wall without announcing itself.
