Bullaun stone, Ballynabortagh, Co. Cork

A small rectangular stone, barely half a metre long and broken at one corner, sits against a field fence in Ballynabortagh, County Cork.

It would be easy to mistake it for any other piece of discarded rubble, were it not for the deliberate oval hollow carved into its surface, roughly 21 centimetres long and 17 centimetres deep. This is a bullaun stone, a type of worked stone found across Ireland in which one or more cup-shaped depressions have been ground or pecked into the rock. Their precise purpose remains a matter of debate among archaeologists, though they are frequently associated with early ecclesiastical sites, holy wells, and enclosed settlements, and are thought to have served ritual, liturgical, or grinding functions at various points in their history.

By the time an Ordnance Survey team mapped the area in 1935, the stone was recorded in situ against the north-north-east bank of a circular enclosure, the kind of low earthwork that in an Irish context often indicates an early medieval ringfort or a site with religious associations. That enclosure has since been levelled, erased by the ordinary pressures of farming and land clearance over the intervening decades. The stone itself has also shifted, and now rests against a field fence to the south-east of its original position. The dimensions recorded are precise: 0.47 metres long, 0.19 metres wide, 0.2 metres thick, with the central depression measuring 0.21 metres in length and 0.12 metres across. It is a modest object, but its displacement from a now-vanished enclosure gives it a particular kind of melancholy weight, a surviving fragment of a setting that no longer exists around it.
