Holy Sites & Wells
In the townland of Carnowen in County Donegal sits a bullaun stone, one of Ireland's intriguing yet often overlooked archaeological features.
These basin stones, found throughout Ireland, consist of natural boulders or rock outcrops with one or more hemispherical depressions carved into their surface. Whilst their exact purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists, they're generally associated with early Christian sites and may have served various functions; from grinding grain and herbs to holding holy water for religious rituals.
