Bullaun stone, Drummin, Co. Wicklow

In the townland of Drummin, a large boulder has been pressed into service as part of an ordinary field fence, yet it carries something that sets it apart from the surrounding stonework: a deliberately carved basin, roughly circular, scooped into its upper surface.

This is a bullaun stone, a type of ancient carved rock found across Ireland, typically associated with early Christian sites or older ritual landscapes. The bowl-shaped hollow, sometimes called a bullaun, was almost certainly made by human hands, though the precise purpose of such features has long been debated. Theories range from the purely practical, grain grinding or pigment preparation, to the ceremonial, with many bullaun stones later adopted into patterns of local devotion, the collected rainwater sometimes regarded as having curative properties.

The stone at Drummin is a sub-square boulder measuring around 0.9 metres in length, with a slightly uneven surface and a single basin roughly 33 to 34 centimetres in diameter and 12 centimetres deep. It sits on a north-facing slope, built into a field fence, which suggests it was at some point incorporated into the agricultural landscape rather than left in any obviously sacred or monumental setting. This is not unusual; many bullaun stones across Ireland have ended up repurposed as convenient building material, their original context lost or gradually forgotten as the land around them changed hands and use over the centuries. The modest dimensions of the Drummin example place it at the smaller end of the scale for this type of monument, though the basin itself is well formed.
