That uncertainty is itself part of the story. Local tradition holds that a stone bearing a depression for holy water exists at this site in Keel, Co. Kerry, and that it is a bullaun stone, the term for a boulder or rock featuring one or more cup-shaped basins, often associated in Ireland with early Christian sites and reputed to hold healing or sacred water. When surveyors went looking for it, they could not find it.

The site has a longer, quieter history behind it. Ordnance Survey Name Books recorded it as a burial place for children, described as unfenced, and it had already fallen out of use by the late nineteenth century. These informal children's burial grounds, sometimes called cillíní, occupied a particular and sorrowful place in Irish rural life, used for unbaptised infants who, under older Catholic practice, were not permitted burial in consecrated ground. They were often situated at marginal or liminal locations, field edges, old earthworks, or sites carrying some earlier sacred association. The possible presence of a bullaun stone here would fit that pattern, connecting a post-medieval burial practice to a much older layer of ritual landscape. Whether the stone ever existed, has been moved, lies buried, or simply evaded those who searched for it remains an open question.
